The final product is an ergonomic sculptural armchair designed to provide optimal comfort and support. It features a sleek, organic shape inspired by a fusion of classic chair designs and modern aesthetics also taking ques from transportation design. The chair includes a supportive headrest pillow and a matching ottoman, ensuring complete relaxation. The ergonomic design enables users to adjust their seating position freely, while the spacious wings provide comfortable sideways sitting.
The manufacturing process for the chair prototype was intricate and involved several stages to ensure precision and quality. The process began with the construction of the foam core, where the CAD model was divided into individual components and CNC milled from XPS foam blocks. These pieces were assembled using adhesive foam, followed by meticulous sanding to achieve a smooth surface. Next, the foam core was coated with epoxy resin and layered with fiberglass sheets in stages to ensure a strong, seamless shell. The chair's base and legs were crafted from laser-cut steel parts, welded, and finished for durability and stability. The laminated frame was then covered with foam padding and batting for added comfort, and the final fabric cover was precisely cut, sewn, and fitted onto the chair with careful attention to detail. Finally, the upholstered chair was assembled with its base and additional elements like headrest cushions were attached.
